In February, I will file for the Office of Sheriff for Sampson County. The Office of Sheriff came into existence around the 9th century, making it the oldest continuing, non-military, law enforcement entity in history. Outside a few elected town marshals, the Sheriff is the only head of a law enforcement agency in this nation that is accountable directly to the people of his/her jurisdiction.
As your Sheriff, I will do my part to insure the Public Trust and preservation of this great office by following these principles:
- Remembering those Sheriffs who have served in our county and across the nation. Build on their successes and implement the same for our county. Learn from their mistakes in an effort to prevent the same failures from occurring again.
- Serve the Office of Sheriff with integrity.
- I will not abdicate the Sheriff’s responsibilities, duties, or management rights to other governmental entities, unions, or political influence. The Sheriff alone stands directly accountable to the citizens for quality of service of the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff should naturally do his/her best to work with all entities because it is important in a democratic society. The Sheriff must work with all segments of government to know and fulfill the Sheriff’s moral and statutory responsibilities in order to serve and protect the citizens of the county.
As your Sheriff and all those in law enforcement, we should never forget that we have a calling to be “a minister of God for good.” Straight from the New King James version Bible, Romans 13:4; “For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute the wrath on him who practices evil.”
For those who serve as a County Sheriff, it is truly a Privilege and Honor to Serve. I am asking you now to place your trust in me, giving me the opportunity to serve this county for which I have lived all my life.
I am asking for your vote on Election Day, May 6th.
Sincerely,
Freddie Butler
